All six divisions of the 2025 Brampton Cricket League season, through the lens of data.
Every year, 48 teams and more than 950 players in the Brampton Cricket League put in the time, the money and the preparation for their T20 campaigns, all chasing the same thing. Six of them finish as champions. The rest collect participation certificates.
So what separates them?
To find out, I went through every T20 match that ended in a result in BCL's 2025 season — around 319 games across all six divisions — and compared the six champions against the remaining 42 teams, looking for patterns that hold up.
What came out was not random variance or one brilliant player carrying a side. It was a template, one that winning teams followed whether or not they knew they were following it. The margins are slim, as they always are in T20, and the differences are subtle. But they are consistent across every division.
If you are planning your 2026 season and starting to recruit, these patterns are the difference between lifting the trophy and watching someone else do it.
Across those 319 matches, teams batting first won 52.98% of the time and teams batting second won 47.02%. That is almost a 6% edge, and in a game of small margins it counts.
Win the toss and batting first gives you a structural advantage. What you do with it is the rest of this article.
One of the most valuable skills in T20 is knowing the par score when you bat first. It is what separates the Rohits, Kohlis, Fafs and Williamsons from everyone else. Going all guns blazing is one approach, and it backfires badly on a tricky pitch.
Unless you have players like that, use the data instead. In BCL, apart from the two grounds with real turf, most matches are played on astro, so the wicket does not behave dramatically differently between venues. Some grounds like FCC produce higher scores because of their dimensions, so I have used the median rather than the average to keep those from distorting things.
When teams batting first won, the median first-innings score was 185.

Score under 100 batting first and you do not win. Between 101 and 150 you have a small chance. Then the probability jumps sharply in the 151–200 range, which made me suspect the brackets were too wide. So I ran it again in brackets of 20.

To get above a 50% chance of winning, you have to score more than 160 batting first. That is why the median winning first-innings score sits at 185.
You will not always bat first. If you bowl first, the median score you need to restrict the opposition to is 148.
How you build that total matters as much as the total itself. So how aggressive should you be in the powerplay?
Watching the recent T20 World Cup and the bilaterals around it, you would think the answer is to attack from ball one. But as the saying goes, you cannot win a game in the powerplay, though you can certainly lose it. That applies double in BCL, where the winning teams played smart rather than ultra-aggressive.
For teams batting first and winning, the powerplay accounted for 30.58% of their total.
That is a simple rule: score 30% of your runs in the first 30% of your overs. Targeting 185? Aim for 56 off the first six. Targeting 200? Get to 60. Then when you bowl, restrict the opposition to under 25% of the target in their powerplay — 24.71%, to be precise.
Batting second is different. There you have to outscore them: winning chases scored 40.65% of the target in the first six overs, losing only 1.6 wickets on average.
My guess, and this is a hunch rather than something the data shows, is that this comes down to fitness in a recreational league. By the back end of the second innings, energy is gone. You need to bank runs earlier than feels comfortable.
They say batsmen win you matches and bowlers win you championships. The dot ball counts make that hard to argue with. I compared each division winner against the average of the seven other teams in their division.

That is 104 extra dot balls over 14 matches, roughly seven or eight a game. If the opposition turns each of those into a single or a two, you have given away at least 12 runs before anything else goes wrong. And dots do more than save runs — they build pressure, and pressure takes wickets. Not bowling them costs you that too.
Extras tell a smaller version of the same story: about half an extra per game. On its own, nothing. Combined with the dots, it adds up.
What this says about recruitment is specific. You do not need the bowler with the most variations or the fastest arm. You need bowlers who hit their areas over and over, build pressure and do not leak.
If one metric separates champions from the rest, it is boundaries.

Three extra fours is 12 runs. Two extra sixes is another 12. Call it 24 runs a game. Put that next to the seven or eight extra dot balls and you have the entire distance between a team that scores 150 and a team that scores 185. In a format where 10 to 15 runs decides matches, that is enormous.
The six-hitting gap is the most telling part. Division winners hit 95 sixes a season against 59 for everyone else — 77% more. Champion teams have players who clear the rope, and clear it often.
I wanted to know whether winning teams were carried by one or two players having the season of their lives, or whether the whole side contributed. So I looked at two things: how many different batsmen reached milestones of 100, 75, 50 and 25, and how many times those milestones were reached.
Collecting this was slow, so I could not do it for all 42 remaining teams. As a control I picked one Division 4 side.

On the surface these two look alike. The reference team even has more players who passed 25. But then look at how often those scores actually happened.

There it is. Six players capable of a fifty against five — essentially the same. But the winners scored more than 13 fifties while the reference team managed 7. Nearly double, from roughly the same group of players.
Potential is not the differentiator. Frequency is.
Having scrutinised the batsmen, it is only fair to do the same to the bowlers.

Twenty more wickets than an average side, about 1.4 per match. That sounds modest until you remember what wickets do: they create scoreboard pressure, break partnerships, and force a new batsman to play himself in, which produces more dot balls.
There is not much data on fielding, but one number stood out: 54.84% of the championship team's wickets came from catches. Over half. Worth checking where your side sits on that.
If you are building a team for next season, here is the blueprint, based on what actually worked in 2025.
That last point changes how you recruit. Instead of chasing the player who scored a century last season, take the one who scored three fifties.
Every team's gaps are different and every team will need a different set of skills to lift the trophy. Go well, and may the strongest data-driven team win.
